About PVSEC
Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Clinic (PVSEC) is the most comprehensive, multi-specialty veterinary center in western Pennsylvania, with the region's only on-site MRI for pets and 24/7 emergency care. Our new home is conveniently located off I-279 at 807 Camp Horne Road, just ten minutes from downtown Pittsburgh.

What is a Specialist?
A veterinary specialist is a doctor who has pursued advanced study in one specific area of veterinary practice. The American Veterinary Medical Association currently recognizes 20 board-certified veterinary specialties.
Each specialty college has its own rigorous training program and certification process, including a comprehensive board examination. These highly selective programs are similar to residency training programs in human medicine, and typically run three to four years beyond the veterinary degree. Only those veterinarians having earned Diplomate status in a specialty college have earned the right to call themselves specialists.

History of PVSEC
PVSEC was formed in June, 2008 as the union of two long-term leaders in veterinary care in western Pennsylvania: Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialists and the Veterinary Emergency Clinic.
Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialists had its humble beginnings with the mobile surgical practice of Dr. Anthony Pardo, Pittsburgh Veterinary Surgery, in September of 1993. In 1994, a group of North Hills veterinarians opened an after-hours emergency service, the Veterinary Emergency Clinic (VEC), in Shaler Township. Shortly thereafter, Pittsburgh Veterinary Surgery opened a stationary practice at the Shaler location. A second surgeon was added in 1996, soon to be joined by an Internal Medicine practice and an Ophthalmologist (1997) and later, a Dermatologist (2003) to create the referral specialty group formerly known as Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialists. The Veterinary Emergency Clinic provided after-hours, 24-hour weekend and holiday emergency care as well as after-hours care for patients of the specialty practices. Close cooperation between the groups and the expanding need for comprehensive specialty and emergency care in the region provided an impetus for partnership between these groups.
In June 2008, the opening of our new, 30,295 square-foot, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital marked the official joining of the specialty and emergency groups and the creation of PVSEC. The move also enabled the expansion of the existing practices to include new specialties such as Neurology/Neurosurgery, Dentistry, and Oncology, as well as on-site MRI and CT imaging by PetsDx, and extension of the emergency department into a 24-hour service. With eight clinical areas of expertise, PVSEC is the most comprehensive, multi-specialty veterinary center in western Pennsylvania.
